I went to the Disney Concert Hall and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art with the photo group. Here are some shots form that day (05.10.08).

The Disney Concert Hall has a lot of (curvy) abstract lines. I was inspired by that and you can see it in some of my shots. And if something in a photo looks out of focus, it was on purpose and it came out to my liking this time =)!

Continuing the curves theme: shot from the Disney Concert Hall terrace/garden. These are Jacaranda trees and they are in bloom all over. They look nice until the flowers fall and become stuck on the street like gum.

I might be done with blogging on Xanga. However, as long as Facebook compresses and reduces the image quality of pictures I post there, you may find me here with an occasional update.

03.16.08 My pet sulcata tortoise's back side. They are the world's third largest tortoise.

03.22.08 My little brother.

03.28.08 Children cover your eyes!!

03.28.08 They love being out doors because at night time, they stay in a Rubbermaid container to protect them from raccoons and opossums.

04.06.08 Ching Ming is a day most Chinese people go to the cemetery and pay respects to their deceased loved ones.  Most people observe it on the official day and others observe it one of the days three days prior or three days after. We usually go on a Sunday and I especially like it when the official day is not on a Sunday. When it is, there's just too many people at the cemetery and it takes an hour or longer waiting in line to get to where we need to get to.

My grandma and aunt are up there. Where they are at, there are mostly Teo Chiu people. It is no longer odd to hear and see so many Teo Chiu's around.

My other little brother.

My cousin.

Sending fortune to the other world.

Nice perspective!

My mom caught me off guard this year with her new year wishes. Translated from Teochew:  May you have good fortune this new year. Make lots of money. Get married.  Have grand children for me to play with.

In addition to YOUR constant reminders, that made me feel old. After this initial reaction, my other reaction was that of humbleness.

I took the day off on New Years. My uncle asked me what I did that day (yesterday). I told him that I spent the morning taking my Dad out; in the afternoon I had lunch with this girl that I had been seeing. He then asked me if she's been to the house before. I jokingly said to him that if it helps jog his memory that she's the prettiest one =P

Note: this is not to imply that I am talented in the art of bringing girls home, nor do I wish to possess such a talent . It just so happens that there have been a few occasions when we met up at my house for an outing and it so happened that a bunch of girls were over momentarily. Thus leading to my uncle's difficulty in remembering individual faces.

Year of the Rat. Happy New Year! Last year was a pretty awesome year. I hope that the good things will continue into this one. If last year was great for you too, I wish you the same.

If you need a topic for your dissertation here's one for you:

I've seen enough American Idol to see how that show continues the perpetuation of what is culturally acceptable and what is not.

On the show, they show clips of horrible and extraordinary singers. Often, they show us the bad singers as people who are what our culture classifies as the ugly, the odd, the freaky, the outcast, or the ghetto.

On the other side, the good singers are the 'beautiful' people. Guess what? I am sure there are 'beautiful' people who can't sing. And there are odd people who can sing but they won't make the cut because they are not attractive enough. Do they show these people? Of course not. Because we all know that beautiful people can sing and ugly people can't. (sarcasm)

And so by being selective about what they choose to allow us to see, the media continues the perpetuation of what is attractive and what is odd. The scary thing is that they are pretty good about staying under people's radar about it.

The next time you watch the show, you need not hear them sing to have a good guess as to if they made the cut or not.

Saturday was the monthly photo club breakfast meeting at the Cowgirl Cafe in Santa Ana and field trip. I almost missed it because we meet at 8am sharp and I was really tired from being up the previous night.

The field trip was shooting pelicans La Jolla Cove in La Jolla. I was going to skip the field trip because La Jolla is a little over an hour's drive. I wanted to keep my energy reserves in store so that I can enjoy a Jim Brickman concert later in the evening.

Well, I ended up going to La Jolla Cove because one of the members didn't plan to stay long.

I believe this is the brown pelican. The reason this place was chosen was because this is pelican mating season. (Get your mind out of the gutter!!) During this time of year, the red coloration on the male pelican is at its brightest.

I took a bunch of shots and this was the clearest. Shot with a Canon 72-200mm at 200mm, f/9, 1/200 sec, ISO 200, manual focus.
